Can't Run? Drink Gin!!

A glass of gin and tonic in the garden
Remembering warmer days.

Week Three of 50k Training

How's it going then T ????

Well, happy days, I am back running. I pottered around with Pewsey Plodders on Thursday night and felt a bit chipper on Saturday so I did an easy off-road 4 miler, with 100 yards through knee-deep water (but it cleaned my Altra's off, so win-win). Then on Sunday I went out to do another 4 miler but came home after 1.6 miles because I wasn't totally ready to return to two days running in a row. (bugger)

What have I been doing whilst not running?

Well, OBVIOUSLY I have been doing strength training, yoga, swimming and pilates, to keep myself in shape whilst unable to run.

Have I hell!!

Yes, yes, that is what I should have been doing, but I am of the idle persuasion and decided to try out some of the gins on my shelf.

Well, the Blog title is The Gin Runner and I haven't been running so I should be drinking gin.....right?

Bottle of Elemental gin and a glass
Elemental my dear Watson!

Let's start with Elemental gin, one of the first gins to be exclusively distilled and bottled in Cornwall for over 300 years - that seems to be a good place to start.

What I would call a traditional gin taste, not one of these fancy-flavoured ones. A juniper and citrusy kind of thing going on with some spiciness.

Serve it with a proper tonic like the Navas original tonic (oh hey, that's from Cornwall as well!!) and a slice of lemon or lime and loads of ice. Nice!

A gin glass
We even have the Tarquin's glass!

Moving onto Tarquin's gin....er, that'll be from Cornwall then? Good guess!.

I like this one too, they produce a variety of gins, amongst them ones with silly flavours - let's just have gin tasting of gin eh?

Their Dry Cornish Gin is again, a junipery, spicey, citrusy little number with a bit of a floral nose (check me out!!) however, one of the ingredients is Devon, yes, DEVON violets - I should really boycott it on that account, but needs must.

Now if you really want to knock your proverbial socks off - try their "Seadog Navy Gin"..... it's only 57%!!

Now then, this little beauty from Loveday is produced in Penryn, an actual stone's throw from where I used to live as a kid. My parents now live just up the road ...still within walking distance!

The Falmouth Dry Gin is made with, amongst other things, bell heather, fennel and samphire - in a still called Mabel. Well, what would you call your still??

Another nice junipery gin with some citrus coming through and a taste of the sea from the samphire.

I bought this one for my husband for Christmas.....just so that I could try it tee hee.

Is drinking gin good for running training?

Absolutely essential in my book. But sometimes, and I reiterate SOMETIMES, you want the taste of gin but not the alcohol (honestly).

Yet again, Cornwall has that covered too - let me introduce Pentire.

A bottle of Pentire with a glass
Pentire Seaward with pink tonic

"Pentire started with a deep love and appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Creating a non-alcoholic spirit which captures the beauty, power and immense flavour of plants and enables clarity of mind and meaningful experiences outdoors, is what drives us."

Ok, that is what they say but basically, Pentire drinks are vegan-friendly and 100% plant-based. While they’re not marketed as an alcohol-free gin, gin is the closest booze it tastes like, especially when served with a good tonic.

They do carbon-neutral deliveries and use organic, Fair Trade ingredients. Packaging is recycled and recyclable. The company also donates to charities that protect the oceans and environment. So they have a lot going for them.

There are two flavours but I personally like Seaward.

I have to admit, I recommended these to someone who was doing Dry January (why??) and they ended up donating them to me because they didn't like them - each to their own but I think they are great.

Any more?

I think that's enough for just one week off running but did you know....it turns out gin drinkers are more likely to feel energetic, confident and sexy, according to a recent study published in BMJ Open Medical Journal.

I rest my case.

Stay safe, more soon xx
